Luke Stephens, Station Manager

Where and when were you born?

Independence Missouri in 1967. Home to President Harry S. Truman.

When did you get into radio and why?

As a senior in high school I decided that I wanted to “do” radio. I grew up a fan of contemporary Christian music and since I couldn’t sing or play instruments well, I decided the only way to be around Christian music all day was to get into Christian radio. First full-fledged radio gig was in 1988 in Kansas City, Kansas.

When did your relationship with Jesus start?

My parents were careful to teach my sister and I about what Jesus did for us as far back as I can remember. In 1973, I gave my life to Christ, under an oak tree in the backyard, praying with my earthly father to my heavenly Father. I can still see it in my mind.

Where is the favorite place you’ve lived?

I think where we’re living now. I’m married with two children, enjoying life in a suburb of Jacksonville, Florida.

What is your best childhood memory?

Bowling in Saturday morning leagues. Looking back now, my parents spent a lot of money so that we could have fun. You know, they probably could have driven a newer car or had a nicer house, but instead they tried to give us a little more happiness.

What sports team (if any) do you always root for?

I can’t get the Kansas City Chiefs out of my system. Not that I’ve tried. Maybe a few 2-14 seasons would do it, but then again, maybe not.

Who is your current favorite musician?

Aaron Shust tops my list at the moment. His CD has “My Savior My God”, “Give Me Words To Speak”, and “Give It All Away”. Possibly three of the best songs on Christian radio right now, and they are all by the same artist. He’s a breath of fresh air … and he didn’t pay me to say that.

Other than the Bible, what book are you reading now?

John Eldridge, “Wild At Heart”. Last good book was “To Own A Dragon” by Donald Miller. Check that one out.

What is your favorite vacation spot?

For our 10th anniversary my wife and I went to Aruba. I’d go back in a heartbeat. What a beautiful island.

What vacation spot have you always wanted to go to, but haven’t yet?

We’re thinking for our 20th anniversary about trying to go to Hawaii (it’ll be here in 2013). We’ve heard that the island of Kauai is gorgeous.

What would be a perfect Friday night for you or your family?

Strolling with my family along a beach somewhere after having eaten a good meal!

What is your favorite food?

I’m a sucker for a good, thick, juicy burger. Medium well with mushrooms and swiss cheese. Gimme some seasoned fries with it, a tall glass of coke with a refill, and some chocolate cake. If you can do that, you have my loyalty forever.

Do you have any pets?

We have the world’s most stubborn beagle named Lucy. She’s cute, loveable, good with the kids. She makes me want to pull my hair out when she refuses to come inside. I think it’s “selective hearing”. Wait, were we talking about the dog or the kids?
